Eritrean People’s Party Members Conduct Seminar in Melbourne, Australia

Eritrean People’s Party members in Melbourne, Australia conducted a seminar on Saturday, March 29, 2009, under the theme of “the unity process between the Eritrean People’s Party (EPP) and the Eritrean Democratic Party (EDP); and the driving forces and their objectives.” The seminar drew a number of Eritrean political organizations and independent Eritrean citizens from all areas of Australia.  

 

Mr. Mohammed Nur Ahmed, member of the Joint Coordinating Body for Australia, who attended the seminar, delivered extensive coverage on the main thrust and objectives of the unity between EDP and EPP. Mr. Mohammed Nur further gave the background and the length of the process, which culminated in a joint and common understanding on a number of issues. He spoke of the common stand of the two political parties on nonviolent resistance, constitution, flag and many others. In addition, Mr. Mohammed Nur underlined how the unity of EDP and EPP would strengthen the Eritrean Democratic Alliance (EDA) and not weaken it.  He also congratulated other organizations that are taking steps towards achieving unity.  In his final note, Mr. Mohammed Nur reiterated that EDP and EPP would uphold their membership in EDA, as well as work to strengthen the EDA.

 

On their part, Mr. Abdel Kadar Habtiyes and Mr. Haileyesus Gebrai both Eritrean People’s Party Central Council members, spoke of the importance of unity and the benefit of bringing other organizations that have similar programs to the process of becoming one. They added that EPP will abide by the terms of the comprehensive unity agreement reached between the two political parties and work tirelessly until the final merger is achieved.

 

The seminar lasted three hours. During the question and answer time, participants raised a number of issues that supported and commended the unity process that is underway between EDP and EPP. Some of the participants also emphasized the importance focusing on building a strong unity through learning from the past failures and experiences. In addition, others strongly stressed the importance of continuing the unity process between the two political parties, with the full participation and involvement of their party members.  

 

The Eritrean Democratic Party and the Eritrean People’s Party are expected to finalize the merger process at the end of this year.
