The Secretary General of the United Nations has warned that patience is running thin with the delays in demarcating the border between Ethiopia and Eritrea.

Kofi Annan said there had been no progress in improving relations between the two countries and has urged the international community to be more active in helping both countries fulfil their commitments under the peace deal.

The start of border demarcation has already been delayed twice this year and a third date set for October now looks likely to pass without progress.

The UN presence in Ethiopia and Eritrea costs well over $150m a year with 4,000 peacekeepers in place on the ground. BBC News: 09-10-03

The peace process between Ethiopia and Eritrea must not "lose momentum" in the crucial run-up to the demarcation of their common border, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has urged. In his latest report on both countries, he also called on them to end their "cold peace" and take advantage of the economic potential normal relations would offer.

"While the final steps of the peace process may be the most difficult," Annan stated, "they are also the most important for the future of the two countries and must be taken sooner rather than later". He also said that both countries should be "more actively assisted" in fulfilling the commitments of the peace deal by the international community. Basing on this and the notorious human rights record of the regime in Eritrea, we have ample ground to fear that in the event the court hearings lead to their deportation to Eritrea, the three poor innocent students could be heading to their certain death, a fate that many a deported refugee by the Maltese authorities recently met at the hands of the regime. The case of the students has indeed reached a dangerously sensitive stage.
