Correction on Ona Day.

Saleh Gadi (December 1st, 2004)

Selam,

Thanks for chronicling the massacres. Good job. However, I would like to correct you on the following:

"On that fateful day, Ona, only 2 km from Keren, was full of people from different places because other villagers and people from neary Keren were there invited for two memorial events (“tezkars”) honouring two previous deaths."

There was no Tezkar during the Ona massacre as far as I know. The accusation by the Ethiopian army ( commanded by colonel Welana), was that the night before, the village hosted a band of "wenbedie".

The significance of the Day is that it was the First Day of EID and the villageres were dressed in white and most of them had just come home after the Eid prayer ready to celbrate. The killing started at about 8:30 in the morning with bombing the Forto, then the infatry, composed of commandos and Tor Serawit, walked into the village chasing the villagers. All this was witnessed by the Secondary school students who were in the school. The bodies of the massacred were mostly dressed in new clothes. I am an eye witness and I was there: I saw the killingof the martyrs and I was there when it was finnally allowed to bury them after about four days. Please correct.

Thank you

Saleh Gadi

Editor's Comment:

Thank you Saleh Gadi for pointing out this additional information.

December 1st, 1970 coincided with Tuesday 2 Shawal 1390 A.H., which is the second day of Edi-Alfatr. So, your assertion that it was an Eid day is proven to be right by the Hijry Conversion Program.
