October In Eritrean History

Do you know that :

     - The Catholic Cathedral in Asmara was inaugurated in October 1923?

     -  That the Italian King Vittorio Emanuele Terzo was in Asmara in October 1932?

     -   That the first ever major Eritrean political congress was convened in October 1971?

     -    That it was in October 2002 that the progress within the Eritrean opposition was reversed by an “illegal and irresponsible” statement issued by a new secretary general of the ENA suspending the ELF-RC for a simple democratic act of walking out of an election session in protest to practices that it did not accept?

Nharnet.com is pleased to continue  presenting to its readers on a monthly basis a list of important dates and  events  in Eritrean history that occurred each month of the  year. The list below is for October.

·          1 October 1974:  Eritrean masses, estimated at 30,000, gathered at Woki-Zager to demand end to civil war between the PLF and ELF.

·          3 October 1935: Italy started war against Ethiopia from Eritrea.

·          7 October 1885: Habab in the Eritrean Sahel was put under Italian protection under the leadership of Kentiba Hamid.

·          7 October 1923: Inauguration of the Catholic Cathedra in Asmara.

·          13 October 1839: The arrival at Massawa of the Lazarist Missionary Giustino de Jacobis, who founded the Catholic mission in Eritrea and Ethiopia.

·          14 October 1971: The First Congress of the ELF opened its long sessions which ended a month later on 14 November 1971.

·          15 October 1884: England declared that it will not oppose Italian occupation of Massawa. (This was done to avert French occupation of the Eritrean coast.)

·          19 October 1985: The Ethiopian army massacred 39 persons from the Nara (Baria) people at Mogoraib.

·          20 October 1977: The ELF and EPLF signed a unity agreement in Khartoum. The agreement was not implemented.

·          25 October 2002: The new ENA secretary, Heruy Tedla, issued a statement suspending the ELF-RC from the alliance reacting to a protest walkout from the election session of the 5th ENA meeting in Addis Ababa. The ELF-RC on 27 October 2002 described the hasty, wrong and destructive action taken by Heruy Tedla as “illegal and utterly irresponsible” measure that would adversely affect for sometime to come the steady success made by the Eritrean alliance under the leadership of the ELF-RC.

·          28 October 1938: The inauguration of the Massawa-Decamere highway.

·          October 1890: it was during the month of October in 1890 that Italy made its first attempt to settle its agriculturists in Gura, Gudofelasi and in the environs of Asmara.

·          October 1932: the Italian king, Vittorio Emanuele III, paid visit to Eritrea.
