16 February 1841: France established
a Consular office in Massawa.
·
5 February 1885: Italy occupied
Massawa with British encouragement and consent.
·
2 February 1914: Banca d’Italia
opened a branch bank in Asmara.
·
17 february 1928: The railway line
from Massawa reached Agordat.
·
18 February 1928: Inauguration of the
Ali Ghidir agricultural plantation near Tessenei.
·
25 February 1935: Modern Asmara
Municipality started functioning.
·
1 February 1941: Allies took Agordat.
Barentu was taken on 2 February, Keren on 26 March and Asmara on 1 April
1941.
·
14 February 150: UN Inquiry
Commission arrived in Eritrea where it stayed till 6 April of the same
year.
·
4 February 1952: All-Eritrea Workers’
Union formed. It organized its first strike in November 1952.
·
1 February 1975: Ethiopia massacred
approximately 80 people in Waki Diba and environs.
·
12 February 1975: ELF fighters
liberated 1,000 prisoners from the infamous Adi Khualla and Sembel
prisons. Among those freed were ELF-RC’s current chairman, Seyoum
Ogbamichael and Haile Woldetensae (Deru’e), who is again languishing in
Isayas Afeworki’s prison since September 2001. (For details, see

10 February 1990: Massawa was
liberated by the EPLA.
