Geneva Celebrates 14th Independence  Anniversary

Joint Press Release

May 15th, 2005

Eritrean Association for Peace and Demcracy,

EDA members :- ELF(RC), ELF (NC) and EFDM

Under a theme of « unity in diversity » the Eritrean Association for Peace and Democracy (EPDS) – Switzerland, in conjunction with the EDA member organisations :- ELF-RC, NC and EFDM, organised a successful public seminar in commomoration of our 14th Independence Day. The event, which was held at the Geneva University Hall on Saturday 14th May 2005, attracted members of the Eritrean community residing in different parts of Swiss cantons.

The public seminar was opened by a speech delivered by Mr. Goitom Kuflom, Executive Member of the EAPD and a veteran of the liberation struggle, who spoke about the meaning and importance of liberation and independence, and about how the fallen heroes and the people they gave their lives to free were betrayed by the PFDJ regime who turned the country into a place of misery and destitution for the Eritrean people. His heart-touching speech was followed by a message from the Eritrean Democratic Alliance written by Ahmad Nasser, EDA Secretary for International Relations, which emphasised the importance of collective approach to addressing Eritrea’s problems and the need to defend opposition unity.

Also addressing the celebration gathering was  Mr. Woldeyesus Ammar, leadership member of the ELF-RC, who spoke on the importance of the day, the painful experiences of Eritrea after 1991, unity experiences of the opposition camp during the past decade and the hopes for much constructive work under the newly formed EDA.

The key note speakers of the day were Mr. Arhe Hamadnaca and Mr. Abdulrahman Sayed, members of the Eritrean Federal Democratic Movement. This is a new movement known for its unique approach to politics, which emphasises the importance of systems of governance instead of partisan political programmes. After giving an overview as to how and why the Federal Movement was established to promote federal democratic system of governance, Mr. Hamadnaca explained the need to establish justice before democracy and that democracy itself is a process that has to be incorporated into daily political culture of the society. Mr. Sayed in his turn gave a comparative analysis between unitary and federal systems of governance and explained the merits of a federal system for countries with plural societies such as Eritrea.

The final part of the seminar was an open debate and discussion, which provided an opportunity for interaction between the seminar participants and the Federalists. Questions and Concerns were freely expressed and were met with convincing answers from the panelists. This particular session had also opened an opportunity for further clarification on federalism as a uniting system and not as a fragmenting one as some people perceive it.

Finally, a concluding statement was made by Abdalla Mohamed Ali, executive member of the EAPD, who thanked the participants and the speakers for their constructive contribution to the success of the educational seminar, which was demonstrated by the lively discussion and the positive feedback received from the participants.
