The ELF-RC Regional Congress of Toronto and its Surroundings

Members of ELF-RC from Toronto and London (Ontario) area, gathered for their annual congress on September 11, 2005 in Toronto. Extensive discussions were conducted regarding the prevailing conditions in Eritrea, and assessed the dangers that are looming ahead, if opposition members do not act in a unified manner to fight against the dictatorship that is suffocating the lives of the desperate people of Eritrea.

Past opposition experience and drawbacks were discussed, and lessons were drawn from the failures; and short-term and long-term plans were discussed to create conducive environment for the progress of the opposition work in Toronto and all its surrounding areas. Opposition differences that handicapped the work of the opposition for the last three years were discussed, and a unanimous decision was reached to overcome those differences, and the will to support the newly formed EDA as the driving force for the success of the work of the opposition. Petty differences should be put aside, and a commitment was taken to bring closer all parties that are determined for the success of EDA and all opposition groups who believe on change for the sake of democracy, freedom and respect of human rights in Eritrea.

The ELF-RC Toronto delegates also committed themselves to work with civil societies and human rights groups that are stationed in Toronto and other surrounding areas. A particular interest was expressed in the need to support the newly formed Refugees Relief Committee, to particularly support the forgotten refuges in Sudan, who are living in a destitute situation.

The ELF-RC Toronto members discussed also the internal situation of their branches, and put forward some ideas on how to strengthen and empower their members. Past experience proved that, the lack of empowerment of own members could result into a situations were members were confused as to what actions to take in extreme situations. A large sum of members were lost due to lack of understanding of the principles under which a democratic organization is built. Future membership of this branch will be based on the quality of membership rather than quantity.

The congress agreed also to open the door for membership, and applicants should first take a moment to study the political program of ELF-RC and have some good understanding for what it stands for.
