Newspaper reports quoting Swiss authorities confirmed this week that 304
Eritrean asylum seekers entered Switzerland in October 2006 alone and
that their number is increasing every month. Out of the 1,230 asylum
seekers that entered Switzerland last month, Eritreans thus ranked first
followed by Serbians (140 asylum seekers) and Iraqis (117).
In October 2006, the Swiss refugee authorities reportedly screened the
cases of 812 asylum seekers from different countries, of whom only 190
were accorded political asylum, 60 of them Eritreans.
It is to be recalled Switzerland in September voted in a referendum to
harden the conditions of granting asylum to refugees but agreed to grant
asylum to Eritrean ‘deserters’ of the forced conscription of the
dictatorial regime Asmara and Eritrean objectors of military service on
reasons of conscience.
