Youth in Khartoum Decide
To Form an Independent Body
ELF-RC Office for
Information and Culture
23.01.2007
Encouraged and assisted by the ELF-RC Office for Youth and Women’s
Affairs, several young Eritreans of different political orientations
held a historic meeting in Khartoum, Sudan, on Friday 19 January 2007,
and decided to form an independent body that is open for membership of
young boys and girls in the Sudanese capital opposed to the dictatorial
regime in Asmara.
Mohammed Adem Artaaa, the Head of the ELF-RC Office for Youth and
Women’s Affairs, spoke at great length in the meeting on the following
subjects:
1.
The situation of Eritrean youth under the
dictatorial regime and the causes that are alienating them from active
political participation;
2.
The actual role of youth in the process of
democratization;
3.
The importance of encouraging our youth to form
their own independent association.
His presentation was followed by a question and answer session in which
further clarifications were provided by other ELF-RC leadership members
who were: young Tsegai Mezghebe, RC member and Deputy Head of the Youth
Office; Ghirmay Kifle, responsible for organizational affairs in Sudan,
and Haneze Kahsai, Chairman of the Khartoum Zone for ELF-RC branches.
Following clarifications and valuable exchanges on agenda items 1 and 2,
more time and constructive discussion was devoted to point 3 in the
agenda. At the end, the participant youth resolved to form an
independent association and elected a five-person provisional committee
and tasked it to do the following:
1.
Enlist a good number of youth as active members
of the association under formation;
2.
Organize a Constituent Congress for the
association;
3.
Complete these and related tasks within its
tenure in office for two months.
