The “Free Dawit Issac” campaign has been
on the spotlight again this week end in the Swedish media, as well as in
the focus of the Swedish government. Sources close to the Swedish
government say that the release of Dawit Issac from prison will be on
the agenda of Swedish government during the next six months, as it
presides over the EU presidency. Sweden took over the EU presidency on
Wednesday, July 1, 2009 under its current Prime Minister, Mr. Frederick
Reinfeldt.
In other news, Swedish political parties
and civic society organizations are planning a mass protest to call for
the release of Dawit Issac and highlight the need for the international
community to raise serious concern on the gross human rights violations
in Eritrea. According to the protest organizing committee, the protest
will focus on bringing a large number of Swedish and Eritrean citizens
to the street on the day of the mass protest.
The protest rally is planned to take
place on August 1, 2009 at the place where the annual festival of the
government of Eritrea is going to take place.
The “Free Dawit Issac” campaign is
increasingly getting international attention as scores of renowned
artists, journalists, and political leaders are showing strong support
for his release. According to a Swedish newspaper, The Daily
Expressen, Benny Andersson, a star singer with ABBA musical band
of Sweden; and Chrissie hynde, an American rock singer are the latest
names added to list of petitioners on behalf of Dawit Issac.
Dawit Issac is a Swedish-Eritrean
journalist held incommunicado by the government of Eritrea since
September 2001 without charge.
