On Saturday, May 9, 2009, the Eritrean military forces shot and killed three female Eritreans at the vicinity of Mereb Bridge. They were killed while fleeing repression and torture in their own country. Sources confirmed their remains were discovered West of Mereb Bridge in the morning hours of Sunday, May 10, 2009. When they were found, wild animals had already eaten most of their body parts, sources of Eritrean People’s Party added. Six other females who were part of their group had managed to cross the border into Ethiopia safely.

In other news, 20 Eritreans have recently fled their country and arrived in Ethiopia through the border point of Rama. The new arrivals included one priest and a mother with her five children.

Mereb Bridge and its surrounding area is one of the several border-escaping routes between Eritrea and Ethiopia where the dictatorial regime of Isayas has turned it into a killing field for hundreds of Eritreans who try to flee the country. It may be recalled that in December 2008, four Eritrean teenagers were killed by Eritrean security forces in the same area while trying to escape into the Ethiopian side of the border.
